Spring Garden Civic Association
A distinct district wedged between Center City and Fairmount proper, Spring Garden originated to accommodate wealthy industrialists during the second half of the 19th century.
The makeup and major draws of the neighborhood — there are multiple religious and educational institutions here — have changed dramatically since then. Luckily, much of the architecture retains its Victorian glory under historical protection.
Bordered by Spring Garden Street to the south, Fairmount Avenue to the north, Pennsylvania Avenue westward and Broad Street to the east, Spring Garden’s charming, sleepy feel is a product of being situated north of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, a bustling boulevard that features Philly’s first-rate Museum Row.
Philadelphia has prioritized development of Broad Street north of City Hall, a call to action developers are more than eager to heed. Perhaps the the neighborhood’s most iconic building, Divine Lorraine Hotel stands at the neighborhood’s northeast end as a symbol of blending traditional architecture with exciting, new growth. The Late-Victorian building has turned heads since 1894 and fell into disrepair for a time. A recent renovation converted the structure into in-demand apartments.
Public transportation provides access to the area from Center City starting points, most directly via SEPTA’s Broad Street Line, which stops right on Spring Garden. The east-west corridor of Spring Garden Street also features bike lanes for easy access to surrounding neighborhoods.
