While Frank Furness designed a number of churches, First Unitarian was a project that was especially dear to him — his father, Reverend William Henry Furness, was First Unitarian’s reverend and instrumental in commissioning his son for the church’s new home.
The church interior recalls the vibrant colors Furness used on the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The hammer-beam ceiling is painted rust red and stenciled with gold-leaf daffodils, set off by blue walls. The church's stained glass windows are by Louis Tiffany & Co. and John La Farge.
Visiting
While its corner location allows for great exterior viewing for walk-up visitors at any time, the church's interior is only open for services. Call the main office for more information, (215) 563-8980.
