Philadelphia and The Countryside: An Insider's Look (PDF)
Frank Furness (1839-1912)
Philadelphia’s most important 19th century architect
During the first half of the 20th century, Furness’s work was disliked, and many of his many important buildings were demolished. Today he is recognized as one of Philadelphia’s greatest architects and most of his remaining buildings have been restored.
Furness’s distinctive Victorian Gothic style incorporated structural innovation with rich ornamentation, particularly carved floral patterns and vibrant, colorful interiors.
