Outsider Tip

Special Ben Franklin 300 Anniversary Beer
Brewed to celebrate and commemorate Ben Franklin's 300th Birthday, Yards' limited edition Poor Richard’s Tavern Spruce is a historically brewed spruce/molasses beer. Brewed with Norwegian Spruce tips and a whole dwarf Alberta Spruce from the local New Kensington Community Development Corporation's Garden Center, Tavern Spruce is a delightfully bold beer, perfect for the winter. Look for it on draught around town and soon to be available in limited edition special cobalt blue bottles.

In its brief history, Yards has already had to expand three times. Yards began brewing in 1995 in a small 900 square-foot building in Manayunk. In less than two years, high demand created the need to expand into a second facility in nearby Roxborough.

And now the brewery has even outgrown its 40,000 square-foot building in the Port Richmond/Kensington area of the city, which it occupied for seven years. Yards Brewery is now located close to Penn's Landing in a beautiful spot overlooking the Delaware River.

Yards joins the Philadelphia area's other top breweries — including Philadelphia Brewing Company, Flying Fish, Victory, Dogfish Head and Stoudt's — to make Philly "America's best beer-drinking city."

Yards produces five different beers year round, including Philadelphia Pale Ale (which the New York Times rated as one of the best pale ales in the country), Extra Special Ale (which was Yards' first beer and is still a favorite among locals), India Pale Ale, Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale and General Washington Tavern Porter. Seasonally Yards brews Love Stout and the occasional Pynk, which incorporates Belgian lambic with fresh raspberries.
